‘चंचला चोर’ उर्फ़ एक सभ्यता की चीरफाड़- प्रियदर्शन
‘चंचला चोर’ उपन्यास की शुरुआत एक लड़के के ज़िक्र से होती है जिसे महीना नहीं आता। आलोचक अचानक सतर्क हो जाता है कि या तो यह कोई किन्नर कथा है या फिर जादुई यथार्थवाद का प्रयोग। लेकिन कथाकार उसे इस पर विचार का अवकाश नहीं देता- उसके पास बताने को दूसरी कथाएं हैं। कथावाचक बताता है कि गांव की यातना से भाग कर वह फिल्मी दुनिया में काम करने मुंबई चला आया और यहां उसे शिवपाल मिला जिसे मुंबई की यातना ने मार डाला है। कथावाचक अब इस कटे हुए सिर वाले शिवपाल से बात करता रहता है- उसकी डायरी की मार्फ़त। आलोचक को अब संदेह नहीं विश्वास है कि यह उपन्यास तो बिल्कुल जादुई यथार्थवाद की तरफ जा रहा है, जिसकी उसे कुछ आधी-अधूरी धुंधली सी समझ है और इस समझ का आधार बस इतना है कि उसने गैब्रियल गार्सिया मारक़ेज़ की कुछ चर्चित कृतियां और कहानियां पढ़ रखी हैं। लेकिन लेखक आलोचक से फिर दो क़दम आगे है।
वह आदमी से भीड़ बनते लोगों के बारे में बता रहा है- तीन साल पहले के अपने पहले सफ़र के बारे में- और तीन साल बाद एक सातमंज़िला बिल्डिंग पर बैठ कर मुंबई में उस पहले, पुराने दिन को याद कर रहा है- ‘अंधेरे में पैर लटकाए। सामने कब्रिस्तान जगमगा उठा है और मुर्दे अपनी-अपनी क़ब्रों से बाहर निकल रहे हैं और देख रहे हैं कि आज किसके-किसके लिए फूल आया है। यहां मरने के बाद भी कुछ उम्मीदें जीती हैं। ‘यह शिवेंद्र का उपन्यास ‘चंचला चोर’ है।
इस उपन्यास की बहुत सारी परते हैं। कथावाचक ख़ूब सपने देखता है – चौंका देने वाले सपने। ऐसा ही एक सपना अमरूद के एक पेड़ की फुनगी पर दो लाल चोटियां बांधे बैठी और इमली खा रही एक लड़की का है जो अपना नाम चंचला चोर बताती है। नायक मानता है कि ‘सपने हमारे सबसे कल्पनाशील विचार हैं। वे झूठ नहीं होते, उनका एक अर्थ होता है।तो फिर इसी अर्थ के लिए चंचला चोर की तलाश शुरू होती है- क्योंकि उसने नायक को बताया है कि सिर्फ उसे ही मालूम है कि उसे महीना क्यों नहीं आता। नायक के लिए यह जानना बहुत ज़रूरी है, आखिर इसी वजह से उसने इतनी सारी यातनाएं झेली हैं। यहां से एक अनोखी यात्रा शुरू होती है, हालांकि यह कहना अधूरा है कि ‘शुरू होती है’, वह दरअसल उपन्यास के शुरू से ही चल रही है- कई दिशाओं में, कई समयों में और कई संदर्भों में। वह बस इस मायने में अनोखी नहीं है कि उसमें यात्रा के जाने पहचाने साधन शामिल नहीं हैं, बल्कि इसमें जो दृश्य बनते हैं वह हमें हमारी दुनिया को कुछ और साफ़ निगाहों से देखे जाने की सुविधा मुहैया कराते हैं।उपन्यास में कई कहानियां हैं।
उस बेदिल मुंबई की कहानी तो है ही जिसमें दुनिया भर की दास्तानें कहने आया शिवपाल आत्महत्या को मजबूर होता है और जहां नायक को सनम जैसी माशूका हासिल होती है। लेकिन यह सब छूट जाना है। नायक को बार-बार अपनी 100 बरस पार की आजी याद आती है- आजी यानी परदादी। वह एक मटके के सहारे चलती है मगर घर के पूरे काम अकेले कर लेती है। नायक के मां पिता आजी को गांव छोड़कर शहर जा चुके हैं और नायक किस बात के लिए कभी अपनी मां को माफ नहीं कर पाता। सपने में आई अपनी चंचला चोर की तलाश में नायक आजी तक लौटता है। उसे यकीन है कि यह चंचला कभी उसके बचपन में उसके साथ रही है। उसे अपनी बेबाक बेलौस सखी याद आती है जिससे कभी खेल खेल में उसने ब्याह रचाया था और फिर मां के हाथों भरपुर पिटाई झेली थी। उसे शनिचरा बाबा की बेटी का खयाल आता है जो उसके हिसाब से उसकी चंचला हो सकती है।
चंचला की यह तलाश हमारे लिए कई नए पृष्ठ खोलती है। हमारे सामने गांव देहात का, वहां बनने वाले किस्सों का, उनके बीच कही जाने वाली लोक कथाओं का एक पूरा पिटारा खुल जाता है। इसके बीच निजी और सामाजिक संबंध, उनके बदलते समीकरण, पुराने को बचाए रखने की ज़िद, नए की ओर बढ़ने की कामना, प्रेम से जुड़े अनंत प्रश्न और व्यक्तिगत यातनाओं के अनंत संसार हैं। यहां हम पाते हैं कि शिवेंद्र के पास एक बहुत सघन भाषा है जो वैसी ही सघन दृष्टि से उपजी है। इस भाषा से गुजरते हुए आलोचक को एक लम्हे के लिए विनोद कुमार शुक्ल की याद आती है, लेकिन शिवेंद्र की भाषा इस खयाल से हाथ झटकती हुई आगे बढ़ जाती है। इस भाषा में तारे भी बोलते हैं और हवाएं भी, और बोलते हुए वे अक्सर कोई नया अर्थ खोलते हैं। लेकिन असली बात यह नहीं है।
असली बात यह है कि चंचला चोर की तलाश हमें स्त्रीत्व के साथ सदियों से किए जा रहे हमारे अन्याय से आंख मिलाने पर मजबूर करती है। नायक अपने बचपन में मिलने वाली लड़कियों को याद करता हुआ अचानक पाता है कि कैसे विवाह के बाद वे बेआवाज गूंगी गुड़ियों में बदल दी गईं, कि पढ़ने लिखने की कामना करने वाली लड़कियों की इकलौती सजा उनकी शादी होती थी जिसके बाद वे नष्ट कर दी जातीं। घरों के भीतर, छतों पर, बचपन में ही वे यौन उत्पीड़न की शिकार बनाई जातीं और उनकी उदासी को समझे बिना उनके ब्याह को उनके अनपनेपन का हल मान लिया जाता। यहां तक आते-आते शिवेंद्र से एक तरह का प्रेम होने लगता है। उनकी बहुत गहरी संवेदनशीलता आलोचक को छू जाती है। लेकिन कहानियों का खेल भी ही खुलता है। कथा नायक जहां कमजोर पड़ा, जहां उसके आंसू निकले, वहीं कहानी उसके हाथ से फिसल गई- वह वक्तव्य में- बेशक सच्चे और धारदार वक्तव्य में- बदल गई। लेकिन इस शिकायत का मौका भी आलोचक को ज्यादा नहीं मिलता। जब वह इस कथा के अलग-अलग सूत्रों को पकड़ने की कोशिश में यहां वहां हाथ मार रहा होता है और यह सोच रहा होता है कि लेखक ने जादुई यथार्थवाद का एक सुंदर प्रयोग किया है, तभी कहानी में मोड़ आता है और पता चलता है यह तो हिंदी की अन्यतम मनोवैज्ञानिक कहानी है।
अंत बता कर पाठक का मजा किरकिरा करना कोई अच्छी बात नहीं, इसलिए इसे यहीं छोड़ते हैं, लेकिन याद दिलाना जरूरी है कि इस उपन्यास को जब आप पढ़ना शुरू करेंगे, तब इसके बहुत सारे अनछुए रेशे आपका बहुत करीब से स्पर्श करेंगे। अंत तक आते-आते उपन्यास हिचकॉक की फिल्म ‘साइको’ की भी याद दिलाता है। ‘साइको’ मे अपनी मां के बरसों पुराने शव के साथ संवाद करता और बीच-बीच में खुद मां में बदल जाता किरदार लेकिन अलग है। वह एक मनोवैज्ञानिक गुत्थी भर हमारे सामने रखता है, लेकिन शिवेंद्र अपने नायक के मनोविज्ञान का कुछ इतना सटीक इस्तेमाल करते हैं कि जादुई यथार्थ की ओर झुकी हुई कथा अचानक विश्वसनीय ढंग से यथार्थवादी भी हो उठती है।
हिंदी में ऐसे मनोवैज्ञानिक उपन्यास हों तो इस लेखक को उनकी ज़्यादा जानकारी नहीं है। जैनेंद्र कुमार के उपन्यासों में यह मनोवैज्ञानिकता खोजी जाती रही है, लेकिन उसका वास्ता ज़्यादातर चरित्रों के अंतर्मन के विश्लेषण से है, उनके भीतर बसे हुए और उनको बदल डालने वाले मनोवैज्ञानिक संकटों से नहीं। हमारे समकालीन समय में तो शायद मनीषा कुलश्रेष्ठ का ‘स्वप्नपाश’ अकेला उपन्यास है जो ठेठ मनोविज्ञान को अपना विषय बनाता है।लेकिन फिर दुहराना होगा कि चंचला चोर को महज एक मनोवैज्ञानिक उपन्यास की तरह पढ़ना इसके साथ अन्याय करना होगा।
यह एक सामाजिक उपन्यास भी है, एक राजनीतिक उपन्यास भी है और स्त्रीवादी उपन्यास तो है ही। यह उपन्यास जादुई यथार्थवाद की भी याद दिलाता है और अपने स्वरूप में लोककथात्मक भी हो उठता है। उपन्यास की कथा से अलग उसकी भाषा का अपना विशिष्ट आनंद है। कहना मुश्किल है, हिंदी की पारंपरिक एकेडमिक आलोचना शिवेंद्र के उपन्यास ‘चंचला चोर’ के साथ क्या सलूक करेगी, लेकिन इसमें संदेह नहीं कि जब आलोचक इस उपन्यास का विश्लेषण करने उतरेंगे तो अपने औजारों को अपर्याप्त पाएंगे। लेकिन क्या पाठकों को किन्हीं आलोचकों की ज़रूरत पड़ेगी? वे उनकी उंगली पकड़े बिना भी यह उपन्यास पढ़ सकते हैं।
