हिन्दी की ध्वनियों का वर्गीकरण- अरुण कुमार
‘ध्वनि’ शब्द ‘ध्वन’ धातु के साथ ‘इण’ प्रत्यय को जोड़ने से बनता है जिसका अर्थ ‘आवाज’ या ‘आवाज करना’ होता है। मनुष्य जब बोलता है तो उसके मुख से निकलने वाली वायु के द्वारा जो आवाज प्रकट होती है उसे ध्वनि’ कहते हैं। संस्कृत भाषा में ध्वनि के पर्यायवाची शब्द ‘ध्वन’, ‘ध्वनन’, ‘स्वन’, ‘स्वनन’ हैं। इन चारों शब्दों का प्रयोग ‘आवाज’ के अर्थ में किया जाता है। सामान्य परिभाषा के अनुसार, ‘ध्वनि’ दो या अधिक पदार्थों के परस्पर टकराने से उत्पन्न होने वाले आवाज को कहते हैं। मानव या अन्य प्राणियों के मुख से उत्पन्न आवाज को भी ध्वनि कहा जाता है। ध्वनि का सामान्य अर्थ मानव के मुख से उच्चारित वह सब कुछ है जिसे हम अपने कानों से सुनते हैं।
पाणिनी ने अपने ग्रंथ ‘अष्टाध्यायी’ में ध्वनि की उत्पत्ति के बारे में बताते हुए लिखा है कि – जब आत्मा बुद्धि के साथ संयुक्त होकर अभिव्यक्ति की इच्छा से मन को उकसाता है तब मन शारीरिक शक्ति को तथा शारीरिक शक्ति वायु को प्रेरित करती है। यही श्वास वायु के साथ मिलकर ध्वनि यंत्रों की सहायता से विभिन्न ध्वनियां पैदा करती हैं। इस प्रकार ध्वनि के उद्भव का आधार चेतना है। चेतना के द्वारा बुद्धि के सहयोग पर ही ध्वनि की उत्पत्ति होती है।
ध्वनियों के उत्पादन में वायु की भूमिका सबसे महत्वपूर्ण है। पाणिनीय शिक्षा में इसी को ‘मारुत’ कहा गया है। वायु के माध्यम से बजने वाले हारमोनियम या बिगुल आदि वाद्य यंत्रों की भांति मनुष्य भी वायु के सहारे ध्वनि उत्पन्न करता है। इन ध्वनियों से ही शब्द, पद तथा पदों से वाक्य बनते है जिनका प्रयोग भाषा में किया जाता है। डॉ भोलानाथ तिवारी के अनुसार, वायु दो प्रकार की होती है। एक वह जिसे हम नाक या मुख के मार्ग से भीतर खींचते हैं। दूसरी वह जो फेफड़े की गंदगी साफ करके बाहर निकलती है। यह दूसरी हवा ही संसार की सभी भाषाओं के बोलने में सहायक होती है। पहली हवा ‘श्वास’ है और दूसरी ‘प्रश्वास’।
डॉ मंगल देव शास्त्री ने ध्वनि उत्पत्ति के चार साधनों का उल्लेख किया है-फेफड़े, कंठ, ओष्ठ, दन्त, तालु, मूर्धा, जीभ, मुखमुख और नासिका को मिलाने वाला स्थान। इनमें से फेफड़ों और श्वास नालिका को श्वास-प्रश्वास का साधन समझना चाहिए और शेष को ध्वनि के उच्चारण के लिए उपयोगी अवयव के रूप में जानना चाहिए।
ध्वनियों का वर्गीकरण
ध्वनियों के वर्गीकरण का प्रयास प्राचीन काल से किया जाता रहा है। ध्वनियों का सबसे प्रचलित वर्गीकरण स्वर और व्यंजन के रूप में ही मिलता है। आचार्य पतञ्जलि ने भी महाभाष्य में ध्वनियों को स्वर और व्यंजन में विभाजित किया है। आधुनिक भाषा वैज्ञानिक डॉ भोलानाथ तिवारी ने ध्वनियों को तीन भागों में विभाजित किया है- स्वर ध्वनि, व्यंजन ध्वनि और अन्तःस्थ ध्वनि।
स्वर ध्वनि
सामान्य बोलचाल की भाषा में कहें तो स्वर किसी अव्यक्त ध्वनि को कहते हैं। आचार्य पाणिनि ने लिखा है कि स्वर स्वयं सुशोभित होते हैं और व्यंजन उसके पीछे चलते हैं। आधुनिक भाषा वैज्ञानिकों के अनुसार, स्वर वे सघोष ध्वनियां हैं जिनके उच्चारण में श्वास नालिका से आती हुई वायु मुख से बिना किसी रुकावट के निकल जाती है। स्वर के उच्चारण में मुख में न तो किसी प्रकार की रुकावट उत्पन्न होती है और न किसी प्रकार का संकोच कि जिससे घर्षण उत्पन्न हो। हिन्दी में अ, आ, इ ई, उ, ऊ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ स्वर ध्वनियां हैं।
व्यंजन ध्वनि
व्यंजन वे ध्वनियां हैं जिनके उच्चारण के समय श्वास की वायु कहीं-न-कहीं बाधित होकर बाहर आती है। इन ध्वनियों का उच्चारण स्वरों की सहायता से किया जाता है। व्यंजन ध्वनियां स्थानीकृत होती हैं। इसका मतलब यह है कि व्यंजनों के उच्चारण में किसी स्थान-विशेष पर वायु अवरुद्ध होती है। हिन्दी व्यंजनों का स्थान के आधार पर वर्गीकरण-
कंठ- क, ख, ग, घ, ड.
तालव्य- च, छ, ज, झ, ञ
मूर्धन्य- ट, ठ, ड, ढ़, ण, ड़, ष
दन्त्य- त, थ, द, ध, न
वत्सर्य- स, ज, र, ल
ओष्ठ्य- प, फ, ब, भ, म
दन्त्योष्ठ्य- व, फ़

अन्तःस्थ ध्वनि
अन्तःस्थ ध्वनि का अभिप्राय उन ध्वनियों से है जो अपनी प्रकृति में स्वर-व्यंजन के बीच में हैं। संस्कृत व्याकरण में ‘यण’ ( य, र, ल, व ) को अन्तःस्थ कहा जाता है। जब एक स्वर के बाद ही उससे अधिक परिस्फुट स्वर आता है और पहला स्वर अति ह्रस्व उच्चारित होता है। ऐसी स्थिति में पूर्ववर्ती स्वर को अन्तःस्थ कहते हैं। उनका वर्गीकरण स्वर और व्यंजन के मध्य किया जाता है। अन्तःस्थ ध्वनियां वे हैं जिनमें जिह्वा उच्चारण स्थान का स्पर्श करने के लिए समीप पहुंचती हैं लेकिन स्पर्श नहीं कर पातीं।
